Root Pruning in Asheville

Roots versus concrete is the oldest argument in arboriculture, and hillside lots argue it louder β€” on a slope, a root doesn't just lift a sidewalk slab, it heaves a whole retaining edge or undermines a driveway cut. Root pruning done right settles the argument for a decade. Done wrong, it converts your favorite oak into a leaner. The difference is process, and we're process people.

What Root Pruning Is β€” and Isn't

A Surgical Cut, Not a Shave

Root pruning is the surgical cutting of specific roots at a defined line β€” typically along a sidewalk, driveway edge, or foundation β€” to stop surface roots from lifting, cracking, or infiltrating the structure. It's distinct from root grinding, shaving roots flush (which invites rot and weakens support), and from topping, which is the worst thing you can do to a tree and which we don't do. A proper prune is a clean cut at a distance from the trunk, made with sharp tools, at a depth and season the tree can handle, followed by soil restoration and a plan for the structure side.

When the Honest Answer Isn't Pruning

What it isn't: a fix for a tree that was planted in the wrong place thirty years ago and is now winning. If a mature tulip poplar's main structural roots are under your garage slab, the honest options are management, risk assessment, or eventual removal β€” not butchery at the drip line that leaves a 90-foot sail on a compromised root plate. We'll tell you which situation you actually have before we quote anything.

The Grade-Aware Mountain Process

Flatland root-pruning guidance assumes level ground and forgiving soil. Asheville provides neither, so our process accounts for grade:

Common Asheville Root Conflicts

Hillside sidewalks and steps β€” Montford, Kenilworth, and Grove Park sidewalks heave when big shallow-rooted maples and old oaks cross them; sloped front yards make tripping hazards worse than flat ones. Driveway cuts on steep lots β€” a root crossing under a sloped driveway grows thicker every year, and the freeze-thaw cycle turns a bump into a cracked slab. Retaining walls and grade beams β€” water follows roots, roots follow water, and a leak at a wall weep hole becomes a root in the wall. Foundations and utilities β€” less common than folklore suggests (roots don't crush concrete), but intrusive roots in old clay sewer laterals are real, and we coordinate with your sewer contractor when a camera scope says the tree is involved.

⚠️ The one-line warning: cutting major roots on a tree standing on a slope above a structure changes the tree's stability math. That's exactly why our root-pruning quotes include a stability look, and why we decline jobs where the honest answer is removal or relocation of the structure instead.
